Florida Battalion of Infantry
As a member of a Civil War reenactment group in Florida, I was approached by our Colonel to design a logo for our
organization. The elements of the logo should be immediately obvious, save for one: the six-pointed star in the middle. The
star, also known as the "Cherokee Rose," was selected as a representative emblem for the state of Florida by Mr. Judah
Benjamin, a political figure in the newly added state in the late 1840s. (Mr. Benjamin later went on to become the Confederate
Secretary of the Treasury.) The emblem was commonly worn by Florida troops during the war, and historical reenactors from
Florida wear the same style star to this day.
